SPIRIT 76

After 11years of extensive cruising and regatta racing in the Mediterranean, Spirit 76 Nazgul of Fordell returned home to Spirit Yachts. As well as a full service and repairs to general wear and tear, the brief from the owner centred around silent nights and making the yacht more energy efficient.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented, “The overarching brief from the owner was to drive down the yacht’s energy consumption. This included optimising the battery system for fast charging from the main engine, and the capacity to run the air conditioning silently for 8-10 hours overnight. The smaller and lighter generator will now only come on as a back-up.”

With energy efficiency front of mind, the team at Spirit fitted a new, quieter Yanmar 4LV170 engine, which is cleaner and more efficient than the previous one. Alongside the new engine, Mastervolt lithium ion batteries were installed, as well as a high output alternator, a new Fischer Panda 15000i variable speed generator and a Webasto variable speed V50 air conditioning system.

Nigel Stuart continued, “We analysed and reconfigured the yacht’s systems for optimum battery recharge, which involved linking everything together so it all works in harmony.”

As well as improving the yacht’s energy consumption, Spirit Yachts worked within the owner’s budget to reconfigure a guest cabin and give the interior a makeover.

Nigel Stuart added, “The team altered one of the aft cabins, turning the bed 90degrees and make it into a larger, king-sized bed. It is difficult to tell which is the new cabinetry and which is the old; all renovation work is in keeping with the yacht as she is today. We re-used the timber that was cut out during the re-arrangement of the cabin to avoid too much waste.”
