This month, Spirit Yachts has announced it has been commissioned to build a contemporary version of a Q Class yacht.
Sometimes known as a ‘mini J Class’ and steeped in sailing heritage, Q Class yachts were first built to the Universal Rule of Measurement in the early 1900s. Development of the rule was led by the famous naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff and adopted by the New York Yacht Club in 1903 to determine entry criteria for the America’s Cup and to facilitate competitive racing. At least 16 Q Class boats were built in the 1920s and 30s, some of which can be seen racing today.
Spirit’s current project (named ‘The Falcon Study’) is being commissioned by the owner and founder of Q7 Yacht Designs, Peter Silvester, who owns an original Q Class yacht named Falcon. Built in 1926 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company and raced under sail number Q7, Falcon recently re-launched on the west coast of the USA following an extensive restoration ahead of her centenary anniversary in 2026.
Peter Silvester commented, “The ‘Falcon Study’ is a unique partnership of world-class industry leaders set up to honour the history and legacy of Falcon and to celebrate her centenary with a new commission launching in 2026. The ‘Falcon Study’ will re-imagine Falcon’s original design using the best systems, materials, and craftsmanship available today.”
Peter added, “Imagine taking the beauty, sailing pleasure, and race winning pedigree of an original Q Class like Falcon and refining her to deliver optimum performance combined with modern maintenance characteristics and ease of use.”
Dykstra Naval Architects were appointed to adapt Falcon’s original Burgess, Swasey and Paine line drawings for modern day sailing and contemporary manufacture. Dykstra was tasked to retain the original hull lines, full keel, and fractional rig, whilst introducing state of the art rigging, systems, and deck hardware.
The design brief from the client Peter Silvester was to “create a ‘modern masterpiece’ that could inspire generations of sailors for the next 100 years”.
Thys Nikkels, CEO Dykstra Naval Architects said, “We love to focus on projects that make our hearts beat faster and the Falcon Study is certainly one of those. To be able to be part of a team that creates a new, re-imagined version of a Q Class Yacht is time well spent.”
After extensive research into wooden boatbuilders worldwide, Spirit Yachts was selected as the chosen yard tasked with creating the yacht, which will be named ‘Q7 Victoria’ / the ‘Victoria commission’.
Spirit Yachts Managing Director Karen Underwood said, “Our roots are embedded in wooden yacht construction, marrying timelessly classic design with modern technologies. The Falcon Study is a perfect fit for our in-house skills and fulfils our passion for custom projects commissioned by visionary owners.”
Julian Weatherill, Head of Design and Production at Spirit Yachts, added, “It has been a pleasure working with the talented team at Dykstra to realise the dream of a passionate and committed owner. Re-imagining a yacht with such historical sailing significance is both an honour and an exciting new challenge. Working closely with Peter and Dykstra, we will retain the authenticity of the Falcon whilst bringing our expertise in modern wood construction, sailing performance, electric propulsion, and luxury interiors to the project.”
The project is in the final design stages with the build due to start this spring leading up to launch in 2026 to coincide with Falcon’s centenary anniversary.

]]>Spirit Yachts’ founder and designer Sean McMillan was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Classic Boat Awards.
Sean McMillan co-founded Spirit Yachts in 1993 with his friend Mick Newman (who sadly later died in 2007), and he went on to become renowned for Spirit’s acclaimed modern classic sail and power yachts.
When they began Spirit Yachts, Sean and Mick set out to design and build beautiful yachts in wooden from responsibly-managed sources. That goal remains at the heart of Spirit’s ethos today.
From award-winning yachts to Bond films, royalty, and sailing successes in his own Spirit R52, Sean has a raft of accomplishments to his name. Along with Mick, he took Spirit from its early days in an old farm building in rural Suffolk to a world leader in modern classic yacht design and build.
Sean commented, “I have been lucky throughout my career to work with some of the most talented craftsmen and women, passionate owners, and experts in their fields. I have stood on the shoulders of giants and I share this award with all of them.”
Hosted by Classic Boat magazine at the historic Royal Thames Yacht Club in London, the annual awards celebrate the best new yachts, restorations, and people in the classic boat world.
Classic Boat described it as the founding of ‘a company that left an indelible imprint on sailing.’ And that Spirit ‘continues to remind the world that Britain was once a great boatbuilding nation…. (and) she still is.’

]]>Spirit Yachts has announced entry is open for its upcoming regatta, to be held in partnership with Locate Guernsey.
Taking place in Guernsey in the Channel Islands, from 15th – 22nd June, the event is exclusively for Spirit Yachts’ owners, crew, and guests.
This year’s Spirit Yachts regatta builds on the successful platform of the inaugural regatta in Guernsey in 2022. Hosted in partnership with Locate Guernsey and based at Guernsey Yacht Club in St Peter Port, the regatta comprises a six-race series alongside a programme of varied social events.
Spirit Yachts Managing Director Karen Underwood commented, “Our bi-annual regatta is a unique opportunity to bring together the Spirit community for a week of unforgettable sailing and socialising. Guernsey offers some of the best sailing grounds in Northern Europe with good breeze, challenging tidal conditions, interesting courses, all against a backdrop of picturesque coastline and the surrounding islands.”
Jo Stoddart, Director at Locate Guernsey, added, “We are delighted to welcome the Spirit fleet back to Guernsey for their second owners’ regatta. The yachts create a fantastic spectacle on the water and a real buzz on the island. It will be a pleasure to showcase everything Guernsey has to offer.”
The regatta programme has been designed to deliver fast paced racing under IRC rating for Spirit yachts from 37ft to 100ft+. The event is partnered by Locate Guernsey, with additional sponsorship from trusted suppliers WEST SYSTEM, Lewmar, OneSails, Pantaenius, and Oceanskies.
Taking inspiration from the historic Nioulargue match races at the original Les Voiles de St Tropez, this year’s race programme incorporates an exciting new addition, and pays homage to an historic sailing tradition. A day has been allocated for Spirit owners and skippers to challenge fellow yachts to a head-to-head match race, bringing an extra level of competition for sailors.
Spirit Yachts Marketing Director Helen Porter said, “The regatta is designed to deliver world-class sailing during the day and lively socialising amongst our thriving community of owners, crew, and guests in the evening. Next year, we hope to hold a similar event in the Mediterranean to gather our growing fleet of Spirit owners in Southern Europe.”
